Description
Overview
Vitamin-B-5 (Pantothenic Acid): From acne to arthritis, from constipation to wound-healing — B-5 may help.
The B-vitamins are required for energy production and the synthesis and metabolism of various biological substances. Your
body does not make them, so you must get an adequate amount in food or from supplements.
Vitamin B-5 is a component of coenzyme A (CoA), a central
figure in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. CoA
is involved in the conversion of choline to the
neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and in the synthesis of the growth,
stress,
and sex hormones. B-5 is therefore needed for the growth,
maintenance and repair of all cells and tissues, and for memory
and learning.
Deficiency of B-5 results in:
- generalized malaise
- elevation of blood triglycerides
- slow healing
- acne.
Low B-5 levels can be caused by:
- heavy drinking
- use of oral contraceptives
- diabetes
- disorders of the digestive tract.
Vitamin B-5 requirements are increased during growth, pregnancy and lactation.
B-5 has been utilized, with positive results, for the following conditions:
- wounds
- acne
- impaired sperm motility
- arthritis pain
- constipation
- urinary retention after surgery or childbirth
- fatigue
- hair loss (in combination with biotin).
